1815 Neurology Physiognomical Spurzheim & Gall Phrenology Physiognomy Medicine
Notable 19th-century German physician, Johann Gaspar Spurzheim alongside Franz Gall, were one of the few doctors of repute to endorse phrenology as a science. Spurzheim, produced several English works on phrenology and physiognomical systems, in which he explored his theories regarding the human brain. Included are within this work are 19 copper-engraved plates of human anatomy, including views of the brain and nervous system.
Gall and Spurzheim,
“invented and advanced the science of phrenology, a concept holding that the moral, sexual, and intellectual traits of an individual are linked to corresponding protuberances of the brain which in turn manifest themselves as lumps on the skull.” (HoH 792)
