Possibly Signed Hudson River School Landscape Chapellier Rosenberger Family, couple overlooking mountain stream serving as a Romantic ruckenfigur device peering into the unrevealed above a mountain stream, oil on canvas, 16 x 22 inches, 30 x 23.75 x 2 inches framed, possibly illegibly signed or monogrammed possibly A space B running off the canvas extreme lower right indistinctly with a potential illegible signature by an unknown unidentified mystery artist far lower right corner partially under frame rabbet, see detail images, patinated post WWII frame. There appears to be a clear A followed by a space and then likely a faint B slightly more elaborate in the extreme lower right corner, the signature itself pernaps closer in nature to that of Asher B. Durand than Albert Bierstadt who is typically found with a cojoined AB however that is only as a reference in describing the potential signature, not an analysis of the artwork. Provenance: Georges Chapellier was a Belgian art dealer who came from London to America after WWI and opened a prominent gallery in Manhattan. His estate was inherited by three daughters in 1978. A portion of the estate was descended to John Rosenberger who operated Rosenberger Galleries on Long Island and then By descent in the Long Island family. All Chapellier labeled items offered descend from the Georges Chapellier Estate while all other items from the Chapellier-Rosenberger family may have other sources via Rosenberger prior to inheritance by the Long Island family from whom we acquired this work. This particular lot does not have a Chapellier label or a Chapellier exhibition citation and thus the provenance is Chapellier or Rosenberger.

Not lined, stretchers appear American and original, period or old, craquelure throughout, surface dirt and mellowed varnish, stretcher bar wear, dusty.
