Description
Historic llidded vegetable dish that was once part of President Ulysses Grant's fine table service and bears the iconic monogram “USG.” This classic "rose medallion"-style china is documented to have been ordered in 1868 and was delivered to the White House shortly after Grant took office in 1869. Before moving into the White House, president-elect Grant and his wife Julia ordered the fancy dinner service through a family friend. The set arrived in New York City in the spring of 1869, from there, it was delivered to the White House. The Grant service is typical of wares in the popular rose medallion pattern - densely patterned with painted floral and domestic Chinese scenes. This dish is particularly wonderful as both the lid, decorated with a mushroom for a handle, and body of the dish survive in excellent condition. After Grant’s presidency, the couple used the service in their New York City townhouse. Their eldest son Frederick eventually inherited what remained of the set after decades of use.
