Description
Framed clipped signature of Union General John Aaron Rawlins, a close friend and confidante of Ulysses S. Grant. Rawlins served on Grant's staff throughout the Civil War, rising to the rank of brevet major general, and was Grant's chief defender against allegations of insobriety. He was appointed Secretary of War when Grant was elected President of the United States.
His clipped signature reads “Jno. A. Rawlins” and appears to be taken from an officer’s commission that identifies him as “Secretary of War.” The signature is nicely framed along with an engraving of Rawlins.
