Lee sat for several photographers in Richmond while commanding the Army of Virginia, including John W. Davies in 1864. Davies’ portrait of Lee in uniform became a favorite of both the General and his wife, and is easily recognized by his neatly trimmed beard and black tie.

This piece originated from a Georgia estate. These memorial pieces were produced after the war, often taken from tintype, CDV, and ambrotype portraits. Since cased images were small and the viewing experience was intimate, these large-format photographs allowed for display.
