Description
1884-dated photo of Confederate General Edward Kirby Smith and his family, taken in Sewanee, Georgia. A one-of-a-kind view, Smith appears here as an aged man, surrounded by generations of his kinfolk and with the youngest child in his lap. A great hound lounges at the old soldier's feet. All of the sitters are identified on the verso in period ink.
Smith was wounded in action during the Battle of Bull Run, spent time leading War efforts in Florida while he recovered, and became commander of the Trans-Mississippi department in 1863. He died approximately four years from the making of this photograph.
