Framed signature of Confederate General Joseph “Fighting Joe” Wheeler. Wheeler was a cavalry general in the Confederate States Army in the 1860s during the American Civil War, and then a general in the United States army during both the Spanish-American and Philippine–American Wars near the turn of the twentieth century. For much of the Civil War he served as the senior cavalry general in the Army of Tennessee and fought in most of its battles in the Western Theater.

In this display Wheeler’s signature is on an 1898 “Sergeant at Arms, House of Representatives” pay-slip, made out to Wheeler in the amount of $10.00. After the Civil War, Wheeler served multiple terms as a U.S. congressman, where he represented the state of Alabama.

The check is framed with an interesting late 19th century photograph of Wheeler in a blue US Army uniform. Ready for display.
