Description
Superb Gettysburg related grouping that includes a desirable 1864 1st edition copy of “The Rebel Invasion of Maryland PA and Battle of Gettysburg.” This volume is the earliest published book describing the Battle of Gettysburg. Written by Michael Jacobs, a Gettysburg resident who was present during battle and familiar with the area’s topography, he was able to provide detailed explanations of Union and Confederate troop movements. The book features a rare folded hand-colored map of the battlefield that was made from actual measurements. The flyleaf of this example is inscribed with name “W.L. Kennedy.”
Included with the book are two war-dated letters written to “W.L. Kennedy” that contain excellent content. The first reads in part:
“I have been long looking for a bright spot in our world of trouble to see the time in which we can again sit around our firesides in harmony and peace…instead of war and anger.”
The author continues on to described fourth of July festivities. The second letter reads in part:
“the rebellion is crushed, but for how long I know not. The Government is too lenient [sic]…hang or butcher the great men and I’ll assure you the men of lesser power will not again even try to rebel.”
Wonderful grouping. Photos include typed inscriptions and more detail.
[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [Civil War, Union, Confederate, Ulysses S. Grant, US Grant, Pickett, Robert E. Lee, Abraham Lincoln]
