Item Details
Description
Western Europe, France, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A decadent trio of brass mantel pieces or to be more elegant and use the aristocratic, court language: "garniture de cheminee." Ornate rococo and baroque inspired pillars, scrolling vines, and classical Grecian urns adorn the clock. The face is protected by a glass door, the numbers marked by enamel Roman numerals, and the interior clock work is stamped with the clockmaker mark of Japy Freres: "JAPY FRERES Cie MED. D' HONNEUR." The matching candelabras are each set on a large, hollow base with a central tiered stem and 4 arms with removable drip pans. Size (clock): 14.5" L x 6.25" W x 20" H (36.8 cm x 15.9 cm x 50.8 cm)

Please note, many garniture de cheminee are often mislabeled as "ormolu," and true ormolu is gilded by a process using powdered gold and mercury, brushed onto surface. During the second half of the 19th century, pieces were gilded by a process of electrolysis and do not contain mercury or gold, and these are often inaccurately referred to as ormolu. This set dates the latter half of the 19th to early part of the 20th century.
