Striking painting of a man and woman dancing figures. Professionally framed and behind glass in a wood frame painted in a light gold. Sight: 23.5 inches tall by 17.75 inches wide. Framed: 30 inches tall by 24 inches wide.
About the artist: Chatov was born in Rostov on Don, Southern Russia. Discovered his love for drawing at age fourteen and originally trained in art in Russia and France then continued his training by joining the Art Students League and National Academy of Arts after moving to New York in 1922 after the Russian Revolution when Lenin gained power. He was quoted to say that he and his family fled Russia because of communism. Chatov later became known for his murals, most notably a set of murals commissioned for the Russian Tea Room restaurant which are now in the collection of a New York City museum. Chatov was also a costume designer for Florenz Edward Ziegfield Jr, a famous American Broadway impresario known as the glorifier of the American girl or better known for Ziegfield Follies. Chatov was acquainted with Manhattan "™s most successful socialites including abstract expressionist William de Kooning, with whom he shared a studio in the 1930 "™s. His portraits where exhibited by the Garibaldi Galleries in New York. Later he and his brother Constantin opened a studio together and taught art classes as he continued his career as a commissioned mural artist where he previously painted a mural for the Cabana Hotel opening. Chatov continues to have works shown in galleries, museums and represented in many private and corporate collections.
