The canvas has been relined and the varnish is dirty and scuffed. Discoloured restoration and strengthening is visible to the naked eye to the details of the costume, to the background and to the painted oval. In raking light it is possible to see restoration to old repairs, upper right.
Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals: the aforementioned old restorations; spots of infilling to the face; an area of restoration (approximately 4x3cm.) to the shirt cuff, lower centre; and further infillings and restorations throughout the background and painted oval, particularly upper centre and upper right.
