Ex. Autograph book of Detroit pianist Kathleen S. Trowbridge, the volume is the result of a lifetime of collecting. She obtained most from her own correspondence or attendance at musical and theatrical performances in Detroit, but she also benefited from private school teachers who wrote to prominent acquaintances and received signatures for Trowbridge and the generosity of descendants of Senator Lewis Cass of Michigan. Her cousin Donald M. Dickinson was Postmaster General during the second Grover Cleveland administration, giving Trowbridge access to the White House, where she gained a letter from First Lady Frances Cleveland and access to other influential people. Many other items and the balance of the book are included in this auction.

Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) was born in Bergen, Norway, to Scottish and Norwegian parents. He was raised in a musical family, and his mother taught him to play the piano by the age of six. From age fifteen, he trained at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany. Lung diseases nearly killed him in 1860 and left him physically impaired. He debuted as a concert pianist in Sweden in 1861. In 1867, he married his cousin Nina Hagerup, and they had one child, who died as an infant. In the 1870s he composed incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, including "In the Hall of the Mountain King." From 1880 to 1882, he was the Music Director for the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and he continued to compose and direct throughout the 1880s and 1890s. He became one of the foremost Romantic Era composers and his use of Norwegian folk music helped to develop a national identity for Norway. He died in Bergen from heart failure.
