Description
Artist: Harry Lieberman
Title: The Crown of Torah
Framing Dimensions: 27 x 23
Signature: Signed
Style: Folk art
Material & Techniques: Oil on Canvas
Harry Lieberman (Poland/America 1876-1983). This original oil on canvas painting is titled “The Crown of Torah.” It depicts Jewish men praying in a synagogue. Tables and benches are arranged around the perimeter of the room, aside from the top edge, where two fancier chairs flank a Torah Ark. A wide-eyed figure wearing tzitzit dominates the center of the painting, while four other men, considerably smaller, are seated on the benches praying. All the men are depicted in Lieberman’s signature naive style. With its subdued color palette and simple configuration, this painting combines Lieberman’s whimsicality with the seriousness of the synagogue. He was known as “The Jewish Grandma Moses,” because he only began painting later in his life. His paintings are part of the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Smithsonian, and the American Folk Art Museum. Signed by artist on bottom left.
