Harry Lieberman (Poland/America 1876-1983). This original oil on canvas painting, titled “The Shtetl,” depicts a shtetl, an old Eastern European village, in Lieberman’s signature child-like style. Numerous figures are packed into the town square, which is surrounded by buildings, including a synagogue, visible on the bottom of the painting. Women stick their heads out of the windows, peering out at the commotion. Bright colors emphasize the vibrancy of shtetl life depicted in this whimsical and eccentric work. He was known as “The Jewish Grandma Moses,” because he only began painting later in his life. Signed by artist on bottom left.
