This is an authentic scarce hair drop with full quillwork and horsehair tail dating to circa 1870 from the Northern Plains Indians. The piece exhibits a parfleche rawhide base which is completely wrapped and covered in porcupine quill quillwork with a fantastic geometric pattern done in mineral pigment natural dyes in a geometric pattern. The top rosette or medallion has a sunburst like pattern showing three rings with an “X” holding them together and at the center an Indian tanned hide fringe covered completely in porcupine quill quillwork. Beneath the rosette shows a hair roach section with five strips of parfleche rawhide further covered in porcupine quill quillwork. The quillwork shows colors of red, dark blue, orange and a white / cream natural. The piece has both sinew and trade thread sewing. At the base of the hair roach / hair drop bonnet is a section of horse tail hair with the rawhide section tied to the roach and the “fringe” being the long tail hair with grey / white to charcoal / black coloring. Truly one of the more unique and fantastic hair roaches we have ever offered or is on the public market with amazing Indian Wars era age. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Mac Grimmer (30531) Santa Fe, NM and a large private Ohio Native American collection. Condition is good, showing nearly all the quillwork still intact and not loose. Measures overall approximately 30”L and the rosette is 2 5/8”W.
