Description
1757 Pierre Grosley Memoirs of JESUITS in Troyes France Jansenism Paris INRI
Leading up to the 1764 Jesuit expulsion in France, countless Jesuits were under attack – whether politically, religiously, or physically – and authors such as Pierre-Jean Grosley published first-hand accounts of the Jesuits during this time and their ongoing struggles with Jansenists. Grosleys “Memoirs” was not well received in Paris, in fact, the first printing of the work was seized and burned at the Bastille. Grosley was best-known for his reports of the history of Troyes, a French city where the Jesuits sought to settle. Much of his description of Troyes is featured in this book.
Worth noting, the title page of this work features the letters INRI (“Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaedrum”), which is traditionally found on crosses and crucifixes in the Catholic tradition. However, the Jesuits often used these same letters to mean Iustum necar reges impious – referring to the justification of exterminating impious and heretical kings and rulers.
