Description
Northern Europe, early Medieval period, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A beautiful brass belt buckle, intricately adorned with champleve geometric and floral motifs in vibrant crimson, cobalt, and saffron hued enamels. Beyond the elaborate surface decoration is the finessed form with its undulating peripheries and finial-shaped termini. Belt buckles of such elaborate stylings, the likes of which were also seen in early Medieval jewelry, began to appear by the 5th century CE, precisely when trousers began to replace the toga, a development thanks to the cultural influences of peoples migrating from the north. Beyond this function, belts with elaborate ornamental buckles, particularly examples of the late Medieval period like this one, were an important accessory as they indicated the wearer's social position, wealth, and rank. Size: 3.3" L x 2.3" W (8.4 cm x 5.8 cm)
