A native New Yorker, Arthur Sarnoff studied at the Grand Central Art School where his instructors included John Ford Clymer and Andrew Wyeth. By the 1930s, he was working regularly as an illustrator for publications including McCall's, American Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, and Good Housekeeping, and for advertisements for Karo Syrup, Listerine, Lucky Strike, and Coors, among others. He also regularly illustrated for pulp fiction. This work was an illustration for Pocket Book 827, The Hepburn, by Jan Westcott, published in 1951.

Condition
Crop marks on brown paper tape applied to three corners of the front. Evidence of fading to the red drapery in the upper left corner. Scattered minor scuffs, losses, and drips. Areas of very fine, stable craquelure. Tack holes around the edges. Soiling to the perimeter of the illustration board. Wear and minor dog-ear creases to the edges and corners of the illustration board.
Reverse with staining, soiling, and brown paper tape remnants from prior hinging on top and bottom edges.
Framed dimensions are 32 5/8 x 25 1/2 x 3/4 in.
