Description
First time at auction…
Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Period, ca. 6th to 10th century CE. A leaded bronze hanging incense burner known as a thurible intended for use in a church or worship setting, suspended from 3 chains and a hook. The cup for holding incense is tripodal, a cylindrical body resting on three petite feet, concentric incised rings on the body exterior which flares to a rim bearing three perforated suspension lugs that each hold the first link of a flexible chain. The flared rim once had a lid with petite perforations to allow the incense aroma to escape, and the chain would allow the thurible to be swung during religious ceremonies. Size of vessel: 3" Diameter x 2" H (7.6 cm x 5.1 cm); w/ chain: 10" L (25.4 cm)
