Item Details
Description
"Take the Witness!" by Alfred Cohn and Joe Chisholm, published Garden City Publishing Company; 1st edition, 1934. This book includes eight-page Preface by Adela Rodgers St John's (Rodgers' daughter).

Hard boards, original publisher's cloth with black lettering on front board a spine [a little soiling and wear]; 5.3/4" x 8.1/2"; slightly darkened endpapers, 315 pages, untrimmed bottom edge of the pages, very good condition.

Earl Rogers (1869-1922) was an American trial lawyer and professor, who later became the inspiration for Perry Mason. "Earl Rodgers was far ahead of the average modern psychologist in his knowledge of mental phenomena, and was a past master in sensing the ingrained prejudices of a witness. He knew the tendency of all untrained human minds to remember things imperfectly and could suggest to such witnesses with imperceptible craft what they immediately believed to be their own complete recollection of the incident."

This book is more than picture of one courtroom genius. Covering the Californian courtroom practice and the cases by Earl Rodgers the book shows Californian political development (the case of Collis P. Huntington); introduction of class warfare (the case of Clarence Darrow); newspaper power (Otis, Hearst); etc., etc. Other insights- corruption trials from the reconstruction of San Francisco earthquake; how San Pedro became a port; the character (lack) of Clarence Darrow; etc.. The authors interviewed people who knew Rodgers personally. The emotional, heartwarming stories come across with vivid impact.

Cohn and Chrisholm were journalists and witnessed Earl Rogers in action, so this book has a good deal of veracity behind it. They also do not sugar coat the story of Rogers' sad decline and fall.
