Description
Carved wood with a well handled and weathered surface embellished with metal work designs and an overall pleasing round form representing the Moon. This mask was considered sacred, bonu amuin, reserved for adult males only. Such masks are worn to “warm the dance space” at the beginning of a sequence known as gbagba or mblo. Appearing during daytime and open to all, gbagba performances feature masked dancers who impersonate familiar subjects such as spirits of nature. This mask has a well handled and weathered surface suggesting years of ceremonial use. The mask measures 15 x 11 inches. A metal display stand can also be included for an additional $50.00. Provenance: Ex Mark Fosbenner collection, Pennsylvania. Ex Tribal Gatherings Gallery early 2000's, Pennsylvania.
