Description
Large collection of over 100 war-date letters written by and to Robert Whalley during the Korean War. His letters, many of which were to his parents, read in part: ‘...We are studying so many circuits that I wonder if I’ll be able to keep track of them...Tomorrow, Henry and I will begin constructing an oscilloscope...The general walked through the school...He has a WAF major as his personal secretary and so I saw my first woman major and captain...We’re studying about transmission lines and micro waves...The squadron has been making appointments for all its men at the dental clinic...To think that we have bases so near to Russian and that are even thinking war breaking out somewhere else other than where it is already...Today we’re going to have a demonstration outside concerning antennas. This last phase is sort of taking care of the little things we have to know about radar...Chances of going to Europe are pretty good and some of the guys have gone on to guided missiles...We have a cargo plane which was used during ‘Operation Haylift’, they’re known as flying boxcars and seem to be developing a certain mechanical error. Most of them have been grounded to find out what is causing all the crashes...I’ve had a little trouble with the chapel...in getting transportation for my Japanese Bible class...Roger...didn’t go along with me but loaned me his vehicle. The first actual time I’ve driven an automobile with right hand steering...was informed that I’ll have to report to Niagara Falls Municipal Airport...It is quite an experience to see those huge planes flying in formation...’ Like many of his letters he concludes with the following line: ‘Now may the good Lord bless and keep you, while we are absent one from the other’. A fine lot worthy of further research.
