Description
Large collection of over 100 war-date letters written by Pvt. David A. Rock of the 110th Regiment, 28th Division, to his wife, dating from 1951 after he first enlisted to the final days of the war in 1953. Rock often writes of his love for her and how homesick he is. A few of the letters read in part: ‘...boy honey I feel a hundred percent better since I talked to you on the phone...I really am homesick for you...I haven’t wrote mom yet which I will have to soon or I’ll get shot when she sees me...We went on a...walk this morning for about two miles in about a foot of snow with two or more inches of ice under it and they expected us to keep in formation, they soon gave up...you talk in your letters like you miss your bed partner, well I miss mine too...We spent about six hours marching today and I feel like I marched about six days...It sure would be nice to come home from work and get that first kiss of the evening...Happy Anniversary honey!...We learned how to sight a rifle and how to hold it using a sling...I made squad leader today much to my surprise... Today we went on a hike as usual away out in the mountains just to learn how to dig a hole in the ground and how to string barbwire so somebody could trip over it...didn’t even get a chance to even wash after being out in the field all last night and all day today. I just changed clothes and went back to work and by now it’s behind a desk. What a time to get a desk job...I have to yell at everybody and tell them to turn out the lights...So far I like it honey. Maybe I will make a career out of this army yet...Wednesday they [trainees] drew rifles so now we are trying to teach them how to carry the damn thing...We are supposed to move up to the 50 field artillery...I don’t know nothing about when we’re leaving this joint...six more days and I have ten months left in the army...I will be back home with my wife and sweetheart where I should be...They pulled another practice alert this morning...I think they just pull these alerts for something to do...I sure wish I was home with you, you wouldn’t have to get that winter coat...to keep you warm...I think Ronney must have wised up a little bit since he came to go to Korea...I sure wish he didn’t have to go to Korea to get that way...I wish that time would go faster so that I could be back with you...I am getting a terrible outlook on this army life I just don’t give a damn about anything that has anything to do with the army...I tried to drown my sorrow but I couldn’t get drunk enough to forget you my honey...I’ve had about eight teeth filled since I came over to Germany...I am going to be driving a jeep so I can’t tell how much time I am going to have to do any writing...Same old stuff today honey, still playing war. Running around the woods like a bunch of fools...I was up with the front line troops and I think the problem is over now...20 more days and I be off for my honey...’ Though lacking war content these letters convey the heartache and homesickness that many men of that time suffered through to serve their country. A fine lot worthy of further research.
