Item Details
Description
Vintage cylindrical cordite carrier, 26 in. tall with a 7 in. dia., decorated with the British Royal Coat of Arms. The main body of the bucket is made of cork with a brown leather exterior and canvas interior. The coat of arms bears the text, translated from French ‘Shame on him who thinks evil of it’ and ‘God and my right’. This particular coat of arms was that used for the reign of Edward VIII, dating this piece ca. 1930s. These flash proof carriers were designed to transfer cordite, a group of smokeless propellants developed and produced in the United Kingdom to replace gunpowder as a military propellant. They were reusable and returned to the magazines for reloading. Expected cracking to the leather affecting the design. Oxidation to the brass fittings used to attach a leather hanger, which is not present. The bottom cap is a separate piece and bears the original felt lining. No visible maker marks or date.
