(1882 - 1967) 'Howlin' Mad', Marine Corp general sometimes called the 'father' of modern U.S. amphibious warfare. Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, also commanded Task Force 56 in the battle of Iwo Jima. Signed first day postal cover, Washington, Jan. 30, 1946, featuring an image of the earth with the hand of Lady Liberty gripping her torch above. Smith signs at the top left in black ink. Light stain on the bottom right, else fine.
