Description
This is a rare and unusual old carved shrine sculpture of an abstract esoteric form used in worship, from the Dogon peoples of Mali, West Africa. Carved from a single piece of dense and heavy wood with an overall abstract style. Perhaps representing a sort of ladder to the spiritual plane. Figures like this appear on village shrines and act as a medium to the spirit world. This particular example has been in private collections since the early 1990's and shows weathering and wear consistent with field use as a ceremonial object. This statue measures 19.5 inches tall.
Condition
Good, well handled, weathered, old stress fractures. What remains is solid.
