Western Europe, England to Germany, Medieval to Post Medieval Period, ca. 12th to 15th century CE. An openwork lead alloy badge depicting a large bird in the center and smaller birds surrounding, set in a circular frame. The most common type of Medieval badge was usually religious in nature, and often acquired by pilgrims visiting holy Christian shrines- similar to souvenirs and as proof of visitation, but badges were used for other purposes, such as political affiliation, livery, and to aid in religious devotion. The central bird may represent a heraldic eagle which could have been worn to demonstrate allegiance to a particular lord. Size: 3.5" L x 2.125" Diameter (8.9 cm x 5.4 cm)

Condition
Repaired and restored. Several break lines infilled with adhesive and new material to neck of upper right small bird and lower right wing of central bird. Losses to peripheries, but otherwise good condition. Dark patina throughout.
