Item Details
Description
Northwestern Europe, England, Medieval, ca. 13th to 14th century CE. An array of 5 copper and leaded brass heraldic and livery badges and pendants that are each an escutcheon or armorial aristocracy. The largest is a 13th century Norman type shield, with suspension holes pierced into the tips, and the face is cast with a checkerboard pattern and incised border. The pendant with the same shape and pattern has a short tab for a now absent pendant bail, and the checkers contain a dark blue-black enamel inlay. The third one of this type is also a heraldic pendant, but a 14th century style with 3 bars embattled, likely the Lovell family crest. The last two contain animals - the narrow badge is soft and not easily discernable - likely a passant or rampart lion. The other is an armorial bearing of 3 passant lions that King Richard I adopted in late 12th century for the House of Plantagenet, which later became the unofficial royal arms of England, and a popular emblem today! Size of largest: 1.8" L x 1.5" W (4.6 cm x 3.8 cm); smallest: 0.85" L x 0.5" W (2.2 cm x 1.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
