Item Details

Description

Large needlework memorial dedicated to John M. Thompson Esq. (1760-1813) and his son Amos Thompson (1799-1811). John married Mary “Polly” Smith (1763-1842), and they had 10 children. Their daughter Clarinda Thompson (1797-1846) most likely stitched this memorial. The c.1814 view looking over a small body of water with a bridge and townscape in the background may depict or be influenced by, the Thompson Family Graveyard in Northeast Dutchess County, NY, but often the scenes depicted on silk embroidered memorial are taken from print sources unrelated to the actual grave site. Silk and watercolor on silk, 18 ¼ x 23 ¼ inches sight, 29 ½ x 33 ½ in the original frame
