Description

Originally offered at $400...

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery vessel known as a lebes gamikos with a flat base, a broad body, and a pair of attached handles. The beige-hued exterior is decorated with bands of black and red pigment, registers of petite black droplets, and rings of black drops that once adorned the tips of palmette leaves; some palmettes are still visible atop the shoulder. Lebes gamikoi are important and highly-symbolic vessels used primarily in times of great happiness - for brides during their wedding ceremonies - or immense sorrow - for women who died without having been married. Size: 7.25" Diameter x 4.875" H (18.4 cm x 12.4 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
