Item Details
Description
12.5" a beautiful example of a JD Craven signed piece of pottery. Piedmont North Carolina ca. 1870. JD Craven was one of the most prolific potters in north Carolina from 1840 to 1890 producing thousands of pieces but only few are signed. A more common north Carolina signage to find but none the less a must have example if your trying to collect all the 19th century signed potters from North Carolina. JD has a brother named John Anderson Craven withal more scarce mark of JAC - this is scarce because he only ived to be 33 years old. JD's father was Anderson Craven with an even more scarce mark of AC. JD CRAVEN has uncles and other brothers that are fun to collect signed pieces of. The original reference for this endeavor was written in the early 1980s by famous folk art historian Howard Smith who died after a stress test at age 44. Howard pioneered and paved the way for our success in the self taught art world. His collection was sold in 1996 by Kimbell Sterling. His book INDEX OF SOUTHERN POTTERs can be found on amazon and I, Matt Ledbetter recommend that book to anyone trying to learn the field of signed southern pottery. It is of sorts, a modern day field manual that has identification material in alphabetical order. When Howard Smith handed my father his copy of the book, he signed it "To Wade, King of the Pickers".
