Description
"The Child's Bible Being A Consecutive Arrangement of The Narrative and other Portions of Holy Scripture in the words of The Authorised Version with upwards of Two Hundred Original Illustrations" Published by Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, London. Undated (1871-1872).
Hard boards, gold tooled leather with "Nannie & Edgar McDavitt From Mamma. September 1872" on the front board; five raised bands on spine [wear and a few old repairs: see photos]; marbled endpapers, gilt page edges, 256 pages, some soiling and wear, very good condition.
[The partnership 'Cassell, Petter, and Galpin' was founded in 1858. the imprint 'Co.' was added in 1878 ("Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Company"). In 1883, the publisher's business name was changed again ("Cassell and Company, Ltd.")
The Bible illustrations of the 'pre-Dore' era:
The book contains near 200 woodcuts by the leading British engravers and illustrators of the 1860s. Among engraver and artist signatures [signed in plate] are:
William Luson Thomas (1830-1900);
D.J. Anderson (active 1860s);
Frederic-Theodore Lix (1830-1897);
Harden Sidney Melville (1824-1894);
Sir John Gilbert (1817-1897) and others. Several woodcuts are not signed.
