Iron Fork shaped Halberd Head
Used Pushing Ladders off the Castle Walls
Siege of Edinburgh Castle 1573
c. 1573 16th century, Iron Fork shaped Halberd Head, Used for Pushing Ladders off the Castle Walls, Choice Very Fine.
This rare fearsome type Iron Military Fork-shaped Halberd Head measures about 5" wide and 13" long including the socket. The iron surface has dark areas from age. The previous owner believes that this rare military fork was used during the Siege of Edinburgh Castle in the year 1573. Military forks of this type were used to defend castles against attacking enemy soldiers and for pushing ladders off the castle walls. They were also used later for defending cannon against cavalry attacks, keeping the attackers further away at a safer distance but meant to also cause serious injury. For reference, a similar military fork with curved spikes can be seen in the New York Metropolitan Art Museum's online collection.
