Description
Willie Jinks (1922-2010) 'M(N)other,'
Atlanta, Georgia, early 21st century, paint on plywood, artist's signature, 18 1/2 x 30 1/2 in.
Provenance: The Outsider and Folk Art Collection of Gene and Judy Kohn.
Note: Hoper Man (Hobby Man) appears in a number of Jink's paintings. This may be a self-reference derived from his studio which he called Hobby Shop.
One of thirteen children born to a sharecropper family, Jinks moved to Atlanta as a young man and worked for the sanitation department. Here, in other people's junk, he found materials for his art. The subjects of his paintings frequently refer to events in his life, especially his youth in rural Georgia.
