Native American, Southeastern or Midwestern United States, Mississippian / Caddo culture, Late Caddo Period, ca. 1400 to 1650 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of sizable form with a planar base, a rounded body with a slightly corseted shoulder, and a tall, flared rim. The dark brown-gray surface is incised with vertical linear marking on the body and triangular zigzags encircling the neck. The profile of this petite jar is attributed to late in the Caddo period and the material used consists of a shell temper mixture, as the fine-grained clay from the regions often shrinks excessively, and the addition of shell particles reduces this shrinkage greatly when firing. Size: 4.5" Diameter x 4.75" H (11.4 cm x 12.1 cm)
Provenance: private South Carolina, USA collection
