Description

LATE 19TH CENTURY FOUR-PANEL FOLDING DECOUPAGE SCREEN

A late 19th century four-panel folding decoupage screen. This romantic screen consists of four wooden panels, each decorated both front and back with decoupage ornamentation, popular during this period. The French word decoupage means 'cut-out,â€™ used to describe cut-out designs or images attached to a surface with glue adhesive, overlapping to cover the surface of an object, and usually finished with a coating of varnish or some similar sealant. These screens were decorative as well as being practical, used for sectioning off larger rooms and/or for preventing drafts.

Each panel measures 22 1/4" Wide; Overall Height: 72 1/2"

Condition

Imperfections consistent with age and material. The brittle nature of the varnish used to seal such collages makes Victorian decoupaged items rather fragile. The breakage evident (see photos) is a testiment to the piece's age and authenticity; overall it's in lovely condition.
