Description
A FRANÇOIS LINKE FRENCH LOUIS XV-STYLE KINGWOOD, GILT BRONZE AND MARBLE COMMODE
François Linke (French, 1855-1946), Paris, France, circa 1915
Marks : F. LINKE (right side upper drawer), #1 Mrs. Flood, #553 (inscribed to top under marble in blue crayon)
34 x 53-3/4 x 22-1/2 inches (86.4 x 136.5 x 57.2 cm)

The serpentine fronted two-drawer chest with floral marquetry panels to front and sides framed with trailing foliate-form gilt bronze mounts, scrolling gilt bronze flourishes on cabriole legs terminating in rocaille sabots, conforming breche violette marble top.

Related to Index No. 1810 in Francois Linke's Day Books, this commode was originally made for Mrs. James Leary Flood of San Francisco, California. In the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake which destroyed their Nob Hill home, including all of the contents, James and Maud Flood constructed a Renaissance Revival-style "house of marble" on Broadway in the Pacific Heights neighborhood designed by architects Bliss and Faville.
