Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Zapotec, Monte Alban, ca. 400 BCE to 200 CE. An interesting hand-built blackware vessel molded into a zoomorphic form! Puckered lips, dorsal crest, and gill like ridges / impressed lines to the sides of the slitted eyes suggest an anthropomorphized fish. The Zapotec, like many pre-Columbian civilizations, placed clay effigies into burials, some in the form of urns or vessels, others simply figural. This intriguing visage may represent a deity, but more likely, this vessel represents an ancestor or spirit. Size: 5.7" Diameter x 6.5" H (14.5 cm x 16.5 cm)
Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010; ex-private US collection, imported prior to 1970
