Roman, late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to early 5th century CE. A forged-iron spear head of lengthy form with a petaloid blade, a wide midrib, and a tapered socketing shaft. Roman soldiers were adept at using a myriad of weapons including a polearm, known as a pilum, with a spear head like this example mounted atop a long wooden pole. Size: 14.875" L x 2.6" W (37.8 cm x 6.6 cm)
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

Chips along blade edge as shown. Professionally cleaned and stabilized, with pitting and oxidation across most surfaces, otherwise in excellent condition. Great form!
