Description

One of the finest autographed Robert E. Lee Gallery Cards extant. Gallery card photographs are rare in and of themselves. They were a short lived larger than CDV format albumen photo that came into vogue immediately after the Civil War then quickly fell out of favor due to the thin cardstock mount which creased easily in this larger size. They were quickly replaced by the similarly sized cabinet card photographs which were mounted on thick unbendable cardstock.
This Gallery Card was taken in Baltimore in 1869 at the Pollock Gallery and it carries the Pollock blind stamp. It is a magnificent from-life studio portrait of a bright eyed yet undeniably sad looking Robert Edward Lee. Look closely at his eyes. Marse Robert autographed the front of this photo in his clearest and boldest signature...R E Lee Truly exceptional. If you are looking for a top shelf, stunning Robert E. Lee signed photo you will be hard pressed to find better.
