BIOGRAPHY:
The young Schlesingers began to study art with Friedrich Heimerdinger (1817-1882) at his recently opened Preparatory School for Artists in 1848. Heimerdinger had been trained at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf (Art Academy of Dusseldorf) under Theodor Hildebrandt who specialized in painting historical genre scenes. After leaving the art academy Heimerdinger began his career in Munich, but subsequently returned to his hometown of Hamburg to open his school in the late 1840s. The Schlesinger brothers were undoubtedly among his earliest students. The schooling they received there was described a “modern curriculum” with an emphasis on drawing.
