Ancient Central Asia, southern Azerbaijan or northern Iran, Amlash culture, Iron Age, ca. 1000 to 700 BCE A long-spouted pitcher bearing a form resembling a graceful bird with a long beak and a curving neck. The vessel features incised linear patterning and a thick handle. The particular use or significance of spouted vessels like this are unknown, however it is possible they were used for serving wine or pouring ritual libations during religious and social ceremonies, perhaps during funerary rites as many have been found in burial sites.
