Description
1891 1ed Confederate Memoirs Joseph E. Johnston Jefferson Davis Civil War General
A rare, first edition of the fascinating historical biography, Life and Reminiscences of Johnston and Davis. A historical collection consisting of two separate and contrasting Confederate memoirs of Joseph E. Johnston and Jefferson Davis.
Originally published separately following each of their deaths, the publisher, R.H. Woodward, cleverly decided to pair these memoirs together into this single work. On the surface this would seem normative given that both were notable historic figures within the Confederacy and during the Civil War, however, beneath the surface Johnston and Davis had tremendous disdain for one another. Records tell of significant conflict between the two throughout the Civil War. Woodwards decision of combining the two enabled their brooding conflict to, in a way, continue posthumously, thus creating intrigue for prospective readers.
Regarding Johnstons memoir:
In Tall Cotton says:
“A vigorous defense of his own actions and necessarily, therefore, a hard-hitting attack on others, particularly on President Davis against whom he records his objections to excess.”
According to Nevins, this work is
“…one of the earliest Confederate reminiscences; strongly partisan, anti-Davis, and defensive in tone.”
Per Eicher,
“This is one of the early classic narratives by a senior commanding general of the Confederate armies. Bitterly partisan and constructed to attack the credibility of charges brought against him… The estimates of troops are way off… he sometimes confuses events, as with several incidents in the Vicksburg campaign.”
Regarding Daviss memoirs, contents include his significant military endeavors, from the War in Mexico, the Battle of Buena Vista, as well as his appointment in the U.S. Senate, and his subsequent election as president of the Confederate States of America.
