Description
1890 Jefferson Davis Memorial Confederate President US Civil War Slavery CSA
Written by John William Jones, the Davis Memorial Volume is a sourcebook on the Confederate president outlining his life and character as well as his sickness, death, funeral, and the “worlds tribute to his memory.” A Confederate sympathizer, Jones wrote this work with the intent to portray Jefferson Davis in a positive light by indulging in wishful thinking and stereotypical arguments of the time such as the North winning by numbers by having a Negro Population and with populations of Europe.
Eicher points out,
“Among the most valuable portions of the work are Daviss autobiography written at Beauvoir in November 1889; his inaugural addresses of 18 February 1861 and 22 February 1862; and a great store of personal information gleaned from Joness friendship with Davis and the recollections of many others…Jones presents several papers attempting to show that Davis was not a traitor to his country but the greatest patriot and stateman of his time.”
This 1890 edition includes 56 full-page black and white illustrations throughout.
