Description
1662 Francis Bacon History of King Henry VII Queen Elizabeth Politics ELZEVIER
“Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.”
― Francis Bacon
Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion.
A rare printing of Bacon’s “Historia regni Henrici Septimi”, or the History of Henry VII. According to Willems, this is a reissue of the 1642 first edition.
“‘The History of Henri VII’ of Bacon had already appeared in the same format and with the same frontispiece [in 1642].” (Willems 1278).
This printing’s ‘frontispiece’ is a fully-illustrated title page. A very fine copy. According to Bergeron,
“[This work] exists as Bacon’s only finished full-scale history of an era….[it is also] Bacon’s portrait of King Henry’s relationship with his wife Queen Elizabeth.”
This book has also been nicknamed “The first modern classic of English history”. It is a culmination of Bacon’s experience in politics and government and in a fine literary style, Bacon analyzes the King’s actions and political issues.
