Description
Japanese woodblock print entitled "Shinjuku" by noted sosaku-hanga artist Toshi Yoshida (Japanese, 1911 - 1995). Ca. 1938. Pencil signed by Yoshida. This print shows a scene of people out and about in the fashionable Shinjuku district of Tokyo in the evening. The darkness is brightened by the warm glow of paper lanterns, which bathe the passersby in a gentle, orange-yellow hue. Yoshida's subtle variation of coloring in his print makes it stand apart from earlier Japanese woodblock prints, and makes a very engaging scene. Matted and framed, not examined outside of frame. Print is in excellent condition. Frame has some wear. Measurements: 7 1/2" wide by 10 1/4" tall (matted); 11 7/8" wide by about 14 1/2" tall by 7/8" deep.Provenance: many pieces in this collection were purchased by the collector from Toshi Yoshida himself. Keywords: art, artwork, Asia, Asian, ukiyo-e, ukiyo e, ukiyoe, woodcut, decor, decoration, Hiroshi, Kiso, shin hanga, Sinjuku
