Virginius Littlepage is a lawyer working in Queensborough, Canada. Dejected and tired of life, he finds little solace in his family affairs and turns his attentions to his secretary, Milly Burden, in a last-ditch attempt to inject some spice in to his life. With the arrival of Littlepage's domineering daughter, who returns from a life of war work and philanthropy, comes a new series of interpersonal problems for all concerned. 'They Stooped to Folly' is an engrossing tale of love, loss, deceit and dedication guaranteed to pull the reader into the midst of the chaos caused by the problems of family, love, and duty...

Ellen Anderson Gholson Glasgow (1873-1945) was an American novelist who won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel "In This Our Life" in 1942; made into a movie by John Huston [1942]. A lifelong Virginian who published 20 books including seven novels which sold well (five reaching best-seller lists) as well as gained critical acclaim, Glasgow portrayed the changing world of the contemporary South, differing from the idealistic escapism that characterized Southern literature after Reconstruction.

Glasgow portrays the insignificance of human relationships and romance by contrasting it directly to the vastness of nature itself.

By writing "Barren Ground", a "tragedy," she believed that she freed herself for her comedies of manners "The Romantic Comedians" (1926), "They Stooped to Folly" (1929), and "The Sheltered Life" (1932). These late works are considered the most artful criticism of romantic illusion in her career.
