Description
Pair of sideboards Directory. France, late 18th century.
Mahogany wood and gilt metal applications.
Measurements: 104 x 78 x 35 cm.
Pair of sideboards of identical structure, raised on four legs of circular profile narrower towards the base. It has the body divided in two levels, the lower one closed with two sliding shutter doors and the upper one with a shelf with a mirrored bottom. The top, in white marble, is supported by two columns with grooves that are continued in the lower body of the unit. The piece is crowned by a golden metal balustrade structure. This is a pair of furniture that continues the French Directory or neoclassical style, considered a transition between the Louis XVI style and the Empire style, with great functionality and lightness. This decorative simplicity and elegance of lines is common in French furniture, as is the use of "exotic" woods and the appreciation of their grain by arranging large surfaces in these materials (or in the panels), without decorative motifs that interrupt the natural lines created by the grain.
