The text reads, Miyamoto Musashi was born in Higo and became a retainer in Buzen. He traveled through numerous provinces perfecting his swordsmanship. Once, at sea off the coast of Hizen, he pierced an enormous right whale with his sword.” There are few written sources related to this episode, but it came to figure in numerous literary and artistic works, circulating widely and becoming embellished as one of the numerous tales of Musashi valor and martial prowess.
