Description
1916 1st ed John Muir Thousand Mile Walk Gulf MAP Mountain Illustrated
John Muir, also known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks”, was an influential Scottish-American naturalist, environmental philosopher, and an early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States. ‘A Thousand-mile walk to the Gulf’ is Muir’s autobiographical journal of his time walking from Kentucky to the Gulf of Mexico in 1867. In his journal he recorded the flora, the forests, physiography of the country, and experiences with the inhabitants as well as his personal reflections on man's attitude toward nature, the animal world, and the processes of life and death.
"The journal is important for an understanding of Muir at this state of his career. It was edited by the writer [Bade] after Muir's death." (DAB).
This 1916 first edition includes 13 illustrations, a map of the route Muir walked, as well as the colored half-tone of a Florida sunset on the cover from a water-color painting by Amelia M Watson.
